The limits of my language means the limits of my world.

Reading Matters

All students have great exposure to reading across the curriculum and reading for pleasure. This means that students' literacy is very well developed. Students make progress through regular reading opportunities and associated interventions.

Reading for Pleasure: Reading Across the Curriculum

Students are always expected to have a ‘book in the bag’ and those in Key Stage 3 select reading books and read for the first ten minutes of English and cover lessons. In addition, students participate in a range of wonderful whole school events such as Bishop Book Week, author visits, library competitions and the national Poetry by Heart competition.

There are planned opportunities for guided reading tasks across the curriculum. Students are introduced to a wide variety of subject specific vocabulary in glossaries and are encouraged to be aspirational in their use of vocabulary to build self-confidence and access more challenging, ambitious texts.

The Library

Our Library is extremely well stocked. Books are at the heart of the Library, but there is also a very wide range of resources including daily newspapers, IT, a careers library and subject specific magazines. Our Librarian, Miss Wood, runs a range of activities through the week, including book clubs and competitions. She also teaches Year 7 Library lessons and supports students with their book choices and related activities. Reading lists are available for each subject.

Homework and Study Clubs are available, click here for more information.

Support for Reading

In Years 7 & 8, all students complete Bedrock homework weekly - an online programme to build vocabulary which is monitored by English teachers. Students who need help with their reading are offered small group reading interventions or Reading Partners. A specialised spelling intervention programme supports students to make progress. Other provisions are made in response to identified needs, such as a phonics programme.

Our Year 12 student Reading Partners work closely with our Librarian and Inclusion team to deliver reading support to Year 7 students. They receive regular training to lead these sessions and to develop reading comprehension.

Literacy Lead - Mrs Fletton

Spoken language forms a constraint, a ceiling not only on the ability to comprehend, but also on the ability to write, beyond which literacy cannot progress.
