In Music, we are committed to upholding and delivering Our Intent, and we are particularly proud of the way we

  • are unapologetically ambitious for students in all key stages, placing value on introducing a wide range of musical styles in Key Stage 3 to lay the foundations for future success;
  • develop confidence and enjoyment in students as performers, and composers;
  • nurture students to realise and unlock their talents and abilities;
  • promote cultural capital through a wide range of extra-curricular activities, for students and staff, novices and experts. 

The Music Department is busy and lively, both in class and in extracurricular activities. Many musical genres and styles are covered in all key stages, from popular music cultures and world folk traditions through to western classical music. Students learn musical skills and understand theoretical aspects through practical music making. Students have access to a wide variety of instruments and specialist computer software.

Key Stage 3

We nurture students' confidence in and enjoyment of music. They develop their musical skills through a curriculum which allows them to cover the range of skills and knowledge recommended in the National Curriculum. All topics are taught with an integrated approach to composition and listening and appraising. Students practise as a whole class, individually and with peers for ensembles. They perform live and become confident using computer programs such as Garageband and Logic.

The curriculum is carefully constructed to allow students to develop and build on their skills and knowledge.  Year 7 students are introduced to a variety of performing skills, basic notation, listening and composition tasks. Musical vocabulary is introduced and reinforced each lesson. The many students who play or sing outside school are encouraged to use their instruments in class.

Key Stage 4

Students follow GCSE EDXCEL Music.

  • 30% Performance - solo and ensemble performances totalling at least 4 minutes are recorded for examination. The standard level is Grade 4.
  • 30% Composition
  • 40% Listening and Appraising, examined through a 1 hour 45 minute paper

Key Stage 5

Student follow A Level EDEXCEL Music.

  • Unit 1 - Performing - 8 minute recital. The standard level is Grade 7.
  • Unit 2 - Composition - Complete a composition of at least 4 minutes and harmonise 2, 4 part chorales in the style of JS Bach under timed conditions.
  • Unit 3 - Appraising - Listening and analytical examination based on the study of set works from a wide range of styles and genres.

Enrichment Opportunities

Musical events are held throughout the year to celebrate students’ talents. We are so proud that many of our students take part in the extracurricular activities we offer. 

We currently have the following groups that meet weekly and take part in termly concerts:

  • Concert Band – open to all (grade 3+) woodwind, brass and percussion players
  • Senior Choir – open to Yr 9 – 13 students and staff
  • Brass Band – open to all brass players
  • Showtime! Open to all
  • String Ensemble - all violin, viola, cello, bass players
  • Guitar Ensemble (all guitarists both acoustic and electric)
  • Ukulele Magic - open to all students 7-13 and staff.  All experiences welcome, instruments provided.

       In addition to the above, the following ensembles have been led by exam students:

  • Chamber Quarter
  • Musical Theatre Group
  • Barbershop Choir
  • Clarinet Ensemble
  • Jazz
  • Percussion ensemble           

Trips and Visits

  • KS3 - Samba and African Drumming workshops
  • KS4 - workshops and visits to enhance the curriculum and musical skills.
  • KS5 – various visits to concerts and shows.
