Admissions at Bishop Stopford School

To clarify the situation regarding BSS Admissions policy for 2008 which has appeared in both local and national press:

The policy had been approved by both LA and Diocese. Given that only 2-3 days were allowed by DCSF for consultation in 2007, dispensation on the points below was given for one year only. Northants County Council told us that this was done following a meeting with a senior official at the DCSF.

It has been acknowledged that these are all semantic issues.

Failure to comply with SEN legislation: the school had included the statement referring to SEN as part of the policy and had not identified it outside of the policy. The school had also said that it consider children where parents had named the school and where the school felt that it could meet individual need.

Failure to prioritise children in care correctly: the school had said that “professionals will have clearly identified that the school is best placed to meet the needs of these particular children.

Requesting personal information: the school asked about parents’ community service.

Following an appropriate period of consultation, the Policy for 2009 complies with the code.
