Citizenship
Citizenship is developing in an exciting way here at Bishop Stopford. Students learn about current and topical issues and get involved in projects to make a difference at a local, national and international level. In Years 7-9, the focus of much of the work is sustainable issues, and we have developed a unique curriculum which schools across the country are taking up. (www.citizenshipforsustainability.com). Lively debates and group based presentations, as well as taking responsibility for projects make Citizenship and subject which makes a difference.
Key Stage 3
Students follow the Citizenship for Sustainability programme from years 7-8. In year 7, students study units entitled Travel and Traffic and Food and Drink. In year 8, students study units entitled Purchasing and Waste, Energy and Water Buildings and Grounds.
In addition, Citizenship topics such as Race and Identity are studied through PHSE.
Key Stage 4
From this September Year 10 students will follow the OCR Short-Course GCSE in Citizenship Studies. Unit 1 - Rights and Responsibilities: Getting started as an active citizen. Unit 2 - Identity, Democracy and Justice: Understanding our role as citizens.
40% One hour written exam.
60% Controlled assessment which is a school based assignment on a Citizenship campaign related to Rights and Responsibilities.
Key Stage 5
Students have the option of taking A-Level Government and Politics
Enrichment Opportunities
Our school calendar highlights various opportunities for Citizenship enrichment. In addition, students carry out a Community Project to make a difference where they live.
In the Sixth Form there are enrichment activities about UK involvement in the EU. Our local MPs and MEPs, alongside representatives from a range of political parties, will be invited into school to debate and we hold referenda and elections at appropriate times.
